SUMMARY: Elsa Gloria Synergy graphics card

My original question:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
I have recently converted a DPW500 system from NT to Tru64v5.0. The system
has an ELSA gloria synergy graphics card (8Mb). The graphics performance for
an OpenGL vizualization package I use is very disapointing. I am supprized,
as I had the very same graphics card in an Intel machine running the same
vizualization system and the performance was pretty good. Interaction with
the model (rotating etc) is very jerky and slow. I have also used the same
Tru64 binaries in another DPW500 but with a 4D51T card and the performance
is good. So I think it is the card/system setup that is at fault.

Does anybody have any tips on tuning X running with the gloria synergy card,
or any other ideas?

I am using CDE and have the resolution set at 1280x1024 and depth at 24.

Thanks for those who replied: Grant Schoep, Iwao Makino, Richard Bemrose.
Others concluded as I evenually did that the OpenGL support for this card is
in software only (hence slow). The support for this card is build into the
OS as of version 5.0 (no Open3d or other modules necessary). The lack of
hardware acceleration support for this card is noted in the release notes
for Open3d but on the whole the information is missleading.

To quote from
http://www.compaq.com/alphaserver/workstations/graphics/products.html ,
which states regarding the Elsa Gloria Synergy card:
"The ideal and affordable solution for a wide range of applications. Our
entry 3D graphics solution combines fast 2D with robust 3D capabilities,
including 3D hardware acceleration for OpenGL, optimized tools and drivers,
as well as support for high resolutions in true color mode. All at an
affordable price."

I quieried this with Compaq, the only reply I had from them was
"You are correct. On Tru64 Unix, the Elsa Gloria is supported in 2D mode
only.

We have some excellent 3D graphics cards in the PowerStorm line that are
fully supported under Tru64 Unix Version 5.0"

This situation sucks. Particularly as the card has good hardware
acceleration under NT4. I can not understand why Compaq has such poor
offerings graphics wise for Alpha Unix systems. There offerings for x86
systems seem much better thought out. Even the supposed high range graphics
card has much lower capability than offerings from HP, SUN and SGI - aren't
they interested in this segment of the workstation market?
