Thanks to all who responded. My original message is at the end.
Everyone seemed to agree on the following:
- Yes it can be done
- It is a stupid thing to do (I certainly can't disagree there)
- Who knows what might cause problems in the future (single user mode,
installupdate, etc, etc, etc)
I've tried to talk my boss out of this but he may just go ahead with it.
Luckily the machine is at his location and not mine and he supports it.

My original question:
Does my root AdvFS domain have to be root_domain? I have no real
good reason to want it to be any other name but my boss wants to
change it.
If it can be any name is it just a matter of renaming /etc/fdmns/root_domain
to something else and changing /etc/fstab?
