Thanks for all the repsonses! My original question was, in a nutshell, "is
this upgrade going to be as easy as it seems? Just pop in the 4.0g cd and
run 'installupdate'?"

Well, of course, there is more to it than that. Here's the gameplan
compiled from the responses:

1) its imperative to get a good backup of the system (in single-user mode0,
especially "root" and "user" partitions. in fact, back up these two
partitions TWICE (on separate tapes) to make sure you got a good copy.

2) print a copy of the root volume configuration (disklabel -r) and have it
handy in case things really get hosed and have to recreate the volume and
restore 4.0d

3) do a firmware upgrade if necessary

4) make sure there is enough free space. check Release Notes for
recommended free space requirements. the installation may (probably will)
fail if there is not enough space

5) check the Installation Guide for a list of subsets that may need to be
removed before the upgrade and reinstalled after the upgrade

6) to reiterate, study the Release Notes and Installation Guide carefully!

7) obtain 4.0g patch kit and install it after the main 4.0g update is
finished

8) "Just don't forget to say your incantations properly - that's where most
people slip up." :)
