This was indeed the case:

lsm:
        lsm_rootdev_is_volume = 1
        lsm_swapdev_is_volume = 1

Setting these two values to zero and rebooting did the trick. I
removed the LSM entries from /etc/inittab and removed /etc/vol/volboot
before rebooting, just to be sure.
