Well, this is not a final answer; but...

I heard from several folks and it appears that this is not the first
time that the same numbered patch kit has been released with
new content included.

Dr. Tom Blinn from DEC/Compaq is passing this concern up the
line to Engineering. He had no explanation for why these kits were
released this way.

If there is any other feedback from Compaq, I will re-summarize.

Original message:

When I began planning my upgrade from DU4.0D to TU4.0G back in August
I checked the FTP site for patches and found t64v40gas0001-20000523.tar.
Now in the past I have interpreted this name to be Tru64 V4.0G Patch Kit #1
released on 05/23/2000. I merrily proceded to download this kit, upgrade
my test box, apply this kit (which happens to only contain TruCluster V1.6
patches and no O.S. patches), check things out and build my confidence.
This past weekend I applied the upgrade and patch kit to my production
cluster and get everything running.

Today I happened to be perusing the FTP site again and discovered
that there is now a t64v40gas0001-20000802 kit posted. Note that the
only difference is in the "date" part of the name. The contents of this
kit DO include O.S. patches! This is NOT the same kit that I downloaded
last month with any errors that were discovered fixed. This kit contains
NEW patches that were not released back in May.

We now have two versions of Patch Kit #1 with DIFFERENT contents.

Am I wrong to feel that this new release should have been called
Patch Kit #2 or at least Patch Kit #1A? How are we to tell the difference
between systems which are at PK Level 1 (05/23) and those at PK
Level 1 (08/02)?

Also, when I scan the FTP site and see a kit #1 tarset and know that I
have installed a kit #1 already, I presume that I am current on my patches.
This situation described above implies that I now have to pay attention
to the release date and check to make sure I have the latest kit installed.
