I'm in the process of evaluating to upgrade my Alpha systems from DU 3.2 to
Tru64 5.0. To do this I got a test account on the Alpha of a colleague (which
upgraded (?) it from OpenVMS to Tru64 5.0 with the help of somebody coming
from outside, and which has the CDs).
I'm now testing my various aliases, scripts and executables (either things I
wrote or I installed or simply I use), to see what runs unchanged, or requires
modifications, or recompilation.
I found that on this V5.0 two "DEC" utilities I used a lot have disappeared :
- the postscript previewer "dxvdoc"
- the text editor "dxnotepad"
Q1) Are they really gone ? Or can they be found in some obscure setld subset
my colleague did not install ?
Q2) I tried copying the dxvdoc executable. I found it complains about a
number of missing libraries. I copied those too (locally in my home dir
and pointed to them via LD_LIBRARY_PATH), but then it complains about
Warning: I18NOpenFile: Could not open file dxvdoc.uid - MrmNOT_FOUND
Can this be overcome without being root ?
Can this be overcome as root (copying into system area, where ?)
Is this unfeasible ?
Q3) what about dxnotepad ? I used it as almost the only editor. I find
dtpad is more primitive (has no split screen, no revert, no top and
bottom navigation, no change in selected area), and also I do not like
its "server" concept.
Q4) can one find anywhere on line the release notes for 5.0 (and perhaps
also for 4.x since I will skip this, but may be some changes occurred
in the meanwhile, and I'd like to know them) ?
We as institute have no s/w support contract (our "central" organization
had, but while I could get CDs from them, it's not obivous about docs)
