for solving my query of the serial port problem
Kermit worked and so did stty and tip.
Mr Braack's suggestion of using the /etc/remotes worked
as well.
the syntax suggsted was:
remote:dv=/dev/tty01:br#9600:
$ tip remote <CR> <CR>
