Dear alphists,

Last fridy I' have downloaded the 5.8 version of firmware from
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/as4x00.html
and now it sussesfully runs on my AS4100 instead of the version 5.7 it
was there before.

I've a ES40 with firmware 5.7 so I tought it was a good idea to upgrade
it to 5.8 as well. So I downloaded 5.8 for my ES40 at the following URL
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/es40.html
I made the 2 floppies necessary to install the firmaware on the ES40,
as described in the above URL. I then booted from the first floppy, and
I succesfully installed the firmware...

... BUT...

        the system never started again!
I had no more the ">>>" console, but only the following message
        on the small LCD panel:
                TIG error
and the system was complitely "dead".

A COMPAQ person soon came and he had to replace the MOTHERBOARD and to
install firmware 5.7 on it.
Now everything is fine again, but I wonder what happend and if I can try
the upgrade again. (I've no real need to upgrade the firmware since with
its version 5.7 T64 5.0a runs with no problem on my ES40)

I'm sure I had no problems during the installation process of 5.8 and I'
m aware that there are 2 different firmware for ES40, one for EV6
processors, and one for EV67 processors, but I'm sure I installed the
right one (EV6).

Any help will be apreciated and will be posted to the list.

Ciao from Italy,
Emanuele
