Dear collegues,
The first important info I got from the replies is:
NEVER UPDATE FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN AVOID IT !!
The second is that I've been unlike since one of us (osf-managers)
did succed in upgrading firmware to 5.8 (on a EV67 machine) in the same
way I did (apart that he run lfu twice before booting again the machine.
During the first lfu, rmc was not updated, but he executed again lfu
from arc and this second time rmc was properly updated). Bravo Ermanno!
The third is that it is possible not to change the whole
motherboard, but simply to move the motherboard jumper J21 from position
1-2 to position 2-3. I did'nt mention it in my mail but we did it. We
then decided to change the motherboard so that J21 has been left in its
original position 1-2.
Thanks to Tom Blinn, Renda Michael and Ermanno Polli
Ciao to everybody,
Emanuele

A word to the wise should suffice: Unless you are seeing some
problem that is known to be fixed by an SRM console firmware
update, or you are updating the base OS software and it has a
requirement for updated firmware, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR SRM CONSOLE
FIRMWARE.
As you've learned, you can change a working system to a dead one
by doing this. Whether it was a problem with the floppy drive
that didn't get caught in the update procedure (floppy drives
are notorious for corrupting data, but most of the SRM updates
do check the checksums of the data and refuse to use it if the
checksum is wrong), or something else, you broke a system that
was working by doing a firmware update that was not required.

If you see a TIG error on the OCP, instead of replacing the motherboard, you
or your service person can do the following:
Power off the system, remove the CPU/Memory cover, remove MMB1, then move
jumper J21, which is the upper left jumper located to the upper right of
MMB1, to position 2-3. This jumper position will force loading the TIG NVRAM
from the serial rom. Leave the jumper in this position.
Replace MMB1, cover etc. and your TIG nvram should be fine (hopefully
forever).
The jumper information is in the ES40 Service Manual.
