I received more than a dozen responses most of whom suggested I use ctrl
and [ to escape out of "vi" insert mode. Some suggested hitting F11 key.
thanks everyone.

Original question:

The console keyboard on our Alpha 8400 is a little weird in the sense
that the escape key doesn't work. It seems to be mapped to ` and ~ (in
the shift mode). I need to esc when I "vi" a file. How do I accomplish
that? I have so far plugged in a PC style keyboard just to escape out of
a vi session.
