MC requirement for cluster / 5.0a

I have a unique(?) question.

I was told by a compaq engineer (field) that they have
built 5.0A clusters w/o memory channel. They could not
explain what they did and also said "You lose a specific
function, but I can't remember what...".

Is anyone aware of how to do this with v5.0a clusters? Or
is this person confused?
