The original question:
I have two 13 gb partitions. I created a volume out of one partition. Next I try
to mirror the partition. The command "volassist -g rootdg mirror Vol01" just
seems to hang. ps shows the process to be in an idle state. Should it take a
significant amount of time to execute the command or should it happen rather
quickly.

All the information was very helpful. The system is up and running. (I like
Alex's answer the best so I listed him first:-)

"You already know by now, I guess... It's taking LOTS and LOTS of time!"

iostat slipped my mind. When checked, both drives were crankin away.

Use iostat to see what the disks are doing. If they're
busy, then it will take however long it takes to copy
13 GB between the devices being used at whatever transfer
size LSM is using.

It can take almost half a day.
For me, it took around 5 hrs on AS4100 to mirror 18gb disks.
If disk activity is there on the mirrored disks, you can assume
mirroring is going on.

I would have thought it would take at least an hour or so. Whenever we
mirror disks we normally set it off in the background and check a few hours
later.
One way to check that the volume is mirroring correctly. If you do a
volprint -g diskgroup -ht or volprint -hAt and look for the volume you are
mirroring it will have a status of WO write only, indicating that it is
synching with the other plex in the volume.
I think ps would show it in an idle state as there is some sort of sleep so
it doesn't interupt the system otherwise you wouldn't be able to do any work
whilst the plex was mirroring up - but don't quote me on that!

I checked the timings on s DS20E:
It took nearly 30 minutes to mirror a
18 GB 10k disk on an ultra 2 bus.
