/etc/hosts modification

Hi - I'm new to Tru64, and had a quick question. The /etc/hosts file says
it's autocreated, and should not be modified directly, but only via the
network management software suite. Is this true, or can programs and/or
scripts I'm writing modify the hosts file as usual? If it's not true, how
can I avoid the interactive network management software to have my programs
add static hosts entries?

Thanks!
