Original request:
an Alpha 4100 running DU4.0D enhanced security, I tried to "stop" password
aging on the root
account by setting the lifetime and expiration to 50 years.
Attempts to log back in as root failed, and now the account is locked. The
console is a graphical
terminal, and it appears to be locked (no keyboard response).
Is there a way to resolve this short of booting to mini-root and editing the
password file?
If not, what is the procedure for "editing" the password file in an enhanced
security environment?
Helpful replys:
To stop password aging, set expiration to 0 years.
Use /usr/tcb/bin/edauth utility to edit password data (which is stored in a
termcap-like format.
Use "man prpasswd" to get info on fields.
To recover from blunder,
>>>boot -flags s
#mount /var
#mount -u /
#mount -u /usr
#/usr/tcb/bin/edauth -dp root
When attempting to log in on Command Line mode, I was given only about 15
seconds before
the terminal switched back to Graphical Mode. This gave little time to use
edauth. During this
time I logged on under my user id (which is a member of sys group) and found
that I could bring
up dxaccounts (and enter root pw) and unlock the root account.
