In V4.0F/G, the pseudo-device and config-driver are equivalent for all
important purposes.
The DOCUMENTED, SUPPORTED way to add new hardware is to boot "genvmunix"
and run doconfig with no arguments. Or use "sizer -n" directly (see the
sizer reference page) and then compare the generated configuration file
to what you had before and merge the changes you need manually. As long
as you do it right, you'll get a working kernel that supports all of your
hardware.
All you need to get the "alt" driver configured is one of the two lines
you cite, and for V4.0F or V4.0G, the config-driver line is preferred.
So I'll be adding
config-driver alt
To the config file and then rebuilding the kernel.
