I was delighted to hear during a group communications meeting last
week that our recent fiscal quarter has shown the strongest growth
in sales of Tru64 UNIX systems (particularly on the new GS series)
of any in the history of the product (going back to when it was the
DEC OSF/1 V1.2 release on the original DEC 3000 systems, quite a
long time ago). Since this would not happen without the support of
our customers, I want to thank all of you who help make it happen.
Also, I learned that we are going to be talking to a number of the
industry analysts about Tru64 UNIX V5.1 and TruCluster V5.1 system
software, which should result in some good press, but sometimes we
get mixed messages, so you should be aware that it's the same good
product many of you have been using for a while, not a new version
you didn't receive yet.
If you are really into Compaq and Tru64 UNIX and Alpha systems and
want to have some fun, check out our Xtreme cranium sports web site
and enter the UNIX Games. "Only the smart survive in this event."
In those places where you can win the cash, $100,000 in prizes is
up for grabs. Register now at www.compaq.com/unixgames and if you
sign up in time, get 50 bonus points. (Compaq employees are not
eligible to win, this is for you folks who deserve a reward for your
UNIX knowledge and to some extent Tru64 UNIX and Alpha expertise.)
One last interesting tid-bit: For higher education customers in the
US (I don't create these programs or the restrictions, please don't
shoot the messenger), we have a special AlphaServer DS20 blow-out sale
where you can get a DS20 with Tru64 UNIX, 512MB memory, and 18GB system
disk for just $8538, you will have to select some other options such
as a graphics card and monitor, second CPU option is available at a
similar price reduction (over 50% off the original list price). Even
less expensive in the "Linux-ready" configuration, but it's the same
hardware for Tru64 UNIX. Order by December 1 and you should be able
to have your system by Christmas; details at
