Greetings all,
I posted a message a while back about unprivileged users not being able to log on
and not being able to su to a normal user account.

Bugs Brouillard of Humboldt State U. hit the nail on the head with the solution:
somehow the permission on / got set to 700 rather than 755.

Many thanks to Bugs and the other folks who had some useful suggestions.

I've got a problem with users logging on, but root can log on. The
following occurs when a user logs on to the console:
"no directory" error message pops up first then
"login error, invalid user id" then
"cannot obtain database information on this terminal"

If I (as root) try to "su" to a user account, I get the "no directory"
error. ...
