Fresh Install vs. Upgrade to 5.0A

I have read different approaches to this argument
about fresh install vs. Upgrade.
I would like to hear from `real'people who have done
either or, and the problems the encountered, what to
be more careful on.
I currently have two Alpha Server 4100 machines, One
running DU4.0F (rev. 1229) 4CPUs, 2G ram, and another
running 4.0D (rev. 878). I understand, from
installation guide, that the 4.0D can't be upgraded
straight to 5.0A, I will need to bring it up to at
least 4.0F.
I am trying to avoid all the work of planning, and
rebuilding everything from catch.
All personal experience stories are welcome.
_Thanks.
NB. I have heard mentioning of 5.1 here, is it
available for full install, or I still need to put
5.0A in, then upgrade?
