Thank you to all who responded. I had several good suggestions that I've looked at, and it seems that Dr. Tom Blinn has nailed down the answers for me. Or, at least pointed me down the correct path.

Problem:
I was looking for a way to boot and run an Alpha running Tru64 without having a local disk.

Solution Summary:
First, what won't work; I found out that MFS lives in swap space, so one of my ideas won't help at all.

What can be done, from what I have learned, is to disable the "swapon" script in /sbin/init.d area, make certain there is no /sbin/swapdefault symlink (for V4.x), and make sure there's no swap defined in /etc/sysconfigtab. (For V5.x you also need to make sure the swap mode is not "eager")

The CORRECT solution is to use the diskless driver package, which I am sure I will be looking at in the future.

Now, it's time to see if I can make it work....

Thank you all for the responses.
