Thanks to all who responded. I received several replies suggesting
everything from convert prior to upgrade to upgrade first then convert. The
consensus is that regardless of when I do the conversion, the process will
be the same.

I decided to perform the upgrade first. That went well.
I have found the procedure for converting the file systems in the Advfs
manual.

Again,

Thanks to all who responded.

Subject: Converting UFS file system to ADVfs

All:
I am in the process of preparing to upgrade my 4.0g system to 5.1 All of my
file systems are ADVfs with the exception of /, /usr, and a file system that
I created on another partition of the same disk. I would like to convert
these file systems to ADVfs. My questions are as follows:
Can I convert prior to doing the upgrade? If so, will I lose the data on
these file systems?
I ask this because I would prefer to do an upgrade instead of a full
install. According to the 5.1 installation, to change from UFS to ADVfs, I
would have to do a full install.
If I do the full install, can I preserve my other ADVfs file systems or
would I have to do a complete backup and restore of everything after the
install?
Thank you.
