UPDATE: kernel configuration/installupdate question

This is the additional information on this problem,
from the 15 minutes of downtime I got this morning.

"shutdown -r now", gets the system all the way down,
then it shows BIOS information, and starts boot-up
process. Thats when it creates a dump as explained
below.
I verified that problem is at the firmware level, but
no idea on fixing.
>>boot dka500
(comes up with firmware upgrade instructions...)
bootfile:update * -all (same with just update *)
(scrolls text ..i guess device scan really fast, and
reboots, comes up normally. It does not perform the
firmware upgrade)

*******************************
I performed installupdate from version 4.0F to 4.0G on
an AS4100. I also upgraded firmware to vmunix:Firmware
revision: 5.7 from 5.3. My Environmental Variable
auto_action is set to:RESTART
However, Customized kernel configuration where not
merged, although merge reported success. (There were
no failed merge files in the logs) I guess it is
because when it was about to reboot with 4.0G, it
crashed and I had to power cycle it.

QUESTIONS:
1. What does "pseudo-device prf 6" mean? I can
see this in the old kernel configuration file, but I
cannot find any reference to it in my System
Administration Book, (DEC OSF/1 Version 3.0 or higher,
Aug. 1994!!). Would like to know what it signifies
before I merge it into the new kernel.

2. During installupdate, after it finished loading all
the subsets, did the merge, and gave the message
rebooting with 4.0G, some characters speed off on the
screen really fast,(more like a dump) and the last I
could see were:
 PD=00058E60 (system_reset_or_error)
 FP=00135C10
 SP=00135AC0
 R2 R3 R4 R5 R29 Saved starting at 00135C20
 R2=00000000
 R3=00000000
 R4=00000000
 R5=00000000
 R29=00000000
Then it just sits there. I have to power cycle it at
this point, then it reboots OK. From then on,
"shutdown -r now" hangs at this point until it is
interrupted. The error is not logged anywhere, since I
believe it occurs after existing the OS. Any clues on
what causes this? Dr. Tom suggested having a serial
console, and try to capture the beggining of the
error. Just wandering if you have been thru this
before, since I hardly get down time to troubleshoot
this machine. No patches on this system yet.

3. Since it seems to me that the dump occurs after the
OS exists, I am thinking of redoing the firmware
upgrade part, even though initial firmware upgrade
verify passed. Any negatives on this corrective action
attempt?
