Thanks to BrianH, Sei Chun, Bob Marcan and Dr. Thomas Blinn for the speedy
responses.
re: using IDE drives on DS10 alphaservers - it appears it's certainly
possible and a cheap way to get lots of disk space. The replies are as

I believe ALL of the DS10 motherboards have the IDE controller chip and
a bulkhead connector that can take two cables (most of the IDE chips are
dual channel), so you could in principle support up to four IDE/ATAPI
drives in the box. As to whether you can physically mount an IDE drive
or whether there is a suitable cable (not too long) available to connect
the drive to the bulkhead/motherboard, I can't say. If your handbook for
the system doesn't make this clear, then you probably need to purchase
some more hardware documentation; a service manual would probably have
the details. Whether this stuff is available on the AlphaServer part of
Compaq's external web pages, I simply don't know, but it's a good place
to start.
