I got very good leads from several people, so far I
know it has to do with routing, and not unix/windows
differences. the windows machine is in a the same
subnet as the printer, while the unix box goes thru a
router.....so somewhere there.... sometimes traceroute
shows 1 hop (unix -> printer, bypassing router),
sometimes it shows 2 hops...(unix ->router->printer)
and sometimes non...unfortunately no direct control on
routers, external company managing whole building
network, so i will have to discuss with them (support
line again!!!???!!!)
Selftest shows printer passwd as 0 (zero) but it
doesn't work...does cold reset (suggested by hpsite to
regain passwd) reset all network settings too? (if u
happen to see this question....no big deal if all is
reset...
SUGGESTIONS BELOW (and thanks to all):
Paul Crittenden
If you the printer is connected to the network through
a hub or switch, and I would assume it is, you can put
the printer hardware address into the switch/hub
database permanently. This should be on the port to
which it is connected. I had this problem in the past
and this fixed it for me.

I thing you have a routing issue, that the ping icmp
finds a path to that other packets can not, and the
the path is open till the route is flushed from cache.

If I remember well the fix was to go to a colleague
with a PC, use some PC version of HP jet direct to
talk to the printer and disable this dynamic stuff and
assigning a fixed IP address, then telneting into the
printer and finishing to configure it.
