Hi Managers,
DS10,alpha tru64 5.1 with Storageworks pedestal and 4x 35GB
disks. Internal disk is 10GB.
Q) Do I create 3 file domains on the boot disk?
Q) If you do have a disk failure on a multiple volume domain, can
you recover any of the data from the good drive(s)?
Q) Is there any way on knowing on which disk the data is stored?
Q) Should I stick to nfs or are the real advantages to advfs.
I am considering how best to configure my disks on a new
installation. By default the system comes with the root (dska), usr &
var (dskg) as advfs file. That left about 5Gb free on dskh. Should I
create a 3rd file domain on that disk so I can access this storage or
buy the utilities and use addvol. According to the docs, you should
"avoid splitting a disk between 2 domains. For example do not add
partition g to one domain and partition h of the same disk to another
domain." Yet I can not resize any of the existing filesets to get at
this data so I would have to create another file domain which is bad
practice apparently. Alternatively I could buy a license and use the
addvol command.
A disk failure that renders the other disk(s) inaccessible seems like a
major disadvantage. Is there some way to access the data on the
good disk? I guess you have to limit the domain size to the size of
you backup system.
Can the transaction log (or any thing else) tell you on which disk the
data is stored if you have a multiple domain?
Would anyone stick their head on a block and say that advfs has
advantages (worth paying for) that out-strip nfs? Any detractors out
there?
Thanx
Dp.
