A number of people suggested that whether or not it's officially
supported by Compaq, it still may be worth a try, given a good backup of
the system I want to try it on. I was fully prepared to go ahead with
that, until Dr. Thomas Blinn, (who's always been known for giving
extremely valuable advice), pointed out to me:

"AdvFS has NEVER worked with PrestoServe hardware,
    and doesn't really need it."

That changes _everything_, of course. I read "doesn't really need it"
as "wouldn't benefit from it even if it worked", but if it's said not to
work, there's really no point in trying it.

Other Compaq folks have confirmed that PrestoServe indeed is not a
supported option with the DS10, which means that whether or not my
hardware technician is correct that it's no longer supported period,
he's correct in being reluctant to install it in this particular system.

What I hope to do at this point is install it in a spare system (as soon
as I can get my hands on one!) and just _try_ it. The system I expect
to get as a spare isn't a DS10, but I'll at least get to see what does
happen with this application and PrestoServe (in a non-production
environment).

I appreciate all the responses I've gotten, both on the newsgroup and
via email.
