The answer was to just delete /etc/.AM_is_running
My thanks to Wolfram Kraft, Martin Moore, and Kalle Flodkvist for this
winning answer.
Werner Rost also suggested deleting /etc/ptmp, which may have been left by
vipw, but this was not my problem this time.
