lpd says Filter 'f' terminated

I'm installing the CAP software package on our Alpha/Tru64 4.0G box. I'm
setting up printing at the moment, and it's working fine -- we can use lpr
to send print jobs to an AppleTalk printer, and the file prints correctly.
But this is the first experience we've had with printing under Tru64 (for
many years we've been running CAP on an Ultrix box), and I'm concerned
about the messages that lpd writes to the printer log file:

<<
papif: Starting job for lanz_at_pangea.Stanford.EDU at Mon Sep 17 16:31:59 2001
on printer My LaserJet 5M:LaserWriter_at_Our-Zone
papif: Finished job at Mon Sep 17 16:32:13 2001
>>
Filter 'f' terminated (sig=-1,err=0)

The two papif lines are normal, and look just like I'd expect. I don't
recognize the angle-brackets or the "Filter 'f' terminated" message.
Sig=-1 looks particularly ominous. Are these entries normal output from
lpd under Tru64, or do they represent errors? What is Filter 'f'?

Thanks.
