SUMMARY: tape drive + robot disappearing

This message seems to be the most promising response that I've received.
Upon inspection, this particular unit has date code 0192b on its oscillator
chip. Since service is aparently aware of this issue, I have called them.
Waiting for the call back from the field engineer now.

Hi Charles,

You may want to look at the EPSON oscillator chip on the MDR fibre
module. It has been reported that chips with date codes 0192b, 0193b
and 0115b produce a high amount of jitter, causing both speed problems
and disappearing devices.
