unix profile question

Recently we made the following changes:

DEC DS20
UnixTru64 5.1a
profile shell from chs to ksh

Question - once you have "su" or returned from a program to the prompt, you
loose the ability to backspace. If you try to set stty you get the
following error:
>>stty erase ^H
unknown mode: erase

Ctrl "H" doesn't work either.
