SUMMARY: permission denied

Hello admins,

the problem is solved. Thanks to
   Prasad, Sreenivasa [sreenivasa.prasad_at_digital.com]
   LHERCAUD_at_bouyguestelecom.fr
   Selden E Ball Jr [SEB_at_LNS62.LNS.CORNELL.EDU]
for the quick answers.

Problem description: see below.

Selden E.Ball led me to the solution:

"The name of the remote system as listed in .rhosts must match the name
that is returned by nslookup on the system containing the .rhosts file
and/or it must match what is listed in /etc/hosts on that system.

It sounds to me like you might have inconsistant system naming.
Some of your systems may not be registered with your internet
nameservices or may not be listed in /etc/hosts."

Ok, entries in .rhosts are ips, not names. But after deleting in /etc/hosts
at "C" the entry for "S" rsh command works. Next I "undeleted" the entry in
/etc/rhosts and entered this name in /.rhosts. Again rsh works.

I observe following rules:

 - if there exists no entry for "S" in /etc/hosts: put the ip of "S" into
/.rhosts.
 - if there exists an entry for "S" in /etc/hosts: put the name of "S" into
/.rhosts.

Thanks again to the list, have a nice week.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / regards
Werner Rost
Hello admins,

let me tell you about a nice little problem:

I have 4 ALPHA workstations with tru64 5.1A patchkit 2 which I will call
"A", "B", "C", "S".

A, B, C should allow user root of S rsh commands. Therefore I created a file
/.rhosts on A,B,C:

# ls -al .rhosts
-rw------- 1 root system 21 Apr 3 14:58 .rhosts
#
#

Content of .rhosts: "<ip of S> root"

Now the nice facts:

User root on "S": rsh "A" ls ok
                             rsh "B" ls ok
rsh "C" ls Permission denied !!!

Another test: I changed /.rhosts on "C" allowing access from "A". Logging on
on Host "A" as root the command

                    rsh "C" ls works fine.

---> I am not able to let "S" acess "C" !!!

I see no messages in any log files on "S" or "C" (/var/adm/messages,
/var/adm/syslog.dated/current ...)

Any ideas?
