mail config in the mailbox machine

I have running a DS10 V5.1A pk1 as mailbox, with clients
imapd and popper.

This machine receives mail from another compaq (ds20)
running PMDF.

How must be configured sendmail in the mailbox machine?
standalone? client or server ?

Now, mail is configured as client, pointing at pmdf-machine
as server mail. But we have observed that the mails is sent
to the server and back once, until they store in the spool-box.

Any help?
