I asked about installing sendmail 8.12.6 in the pre-8.12 way (set uid to
root) for compatibility with our other installations, as described in the
sendmail documentation

Kai Lanz explained the arcane, the install-set-user-id target is included
in makefiles ONLY if one does the following additional steos
> To build a setuid-root sendmail, you first need to edit your
> site.config.m4 file under devtools/Site and add the line:

> define(`confSETUSERID_INSTALL')
This generates different makefiles. Still one cannot do "sh ./Build
install-set-user-id" from the top level directory, but if one cd
obj.OSF1.V4.0.alpha/sendmail one can do "make install-set-user-id"
(I actually did a "make -n" and verified that the commands were equivalent
to those I used manually)
