Making the move to a new computer

When you move to a new house, the biggest hurdle is packing up that first box.  Moving to a new computer can seem equally overwhelming with having to reinstall programs, copy personal files, and set up printers and network connections. These tips will help you get started:

  • Turn on both computers so you can compare your new one to the old. Most likely your new computer has Windows 98 installed.
  • If you have the technical know-how and the equipment, you can connect the two computers with network cards and a cable. This makes copying files across a snap. For the rest of us, using floppy disks or Zip disks is the way to go. This is a great opportunity to start fresh with well-organized files and a junk-free desktop. Copy only the files you need.
  • To set up your programs on the new computer, use the original program installation disks. This is the best way to ensure that all of the necessary files and settings are installed correctly.

Using your old monitor and keyboard? Be sure to take the files and necessary information off of your old computer before you set up the new one.
