Get on the Net
The old wires still work, but
Internet Explorer needs information to connect.
Instead of calling your ISP for the details you've
forgotten, follow these steps to find your account
information on your old computer:
- On the
View
menu in Internet Explorer,
click
Internet
Options, and then click the Connection
tab.
- If you connect to the
Internet through a modem, click the Settings button. Here
you'll find your logon information.
- Next, click the Properties
button to
find information about your Dial-Up Networking
connection, such as the phone number you dial.
- To find the IP server
address you use, if any, click the Server Types
tab. Make
sure TCP/IP is
selected, and then click the TCP/IP Settings
button.
To make your new browser work
and act like your old one, compare the other settings in
the Internet Options
dialog box.
Pack up your favorites If you've invested a lot of time in creating a
Favorites list, you'll probably want to copy it over to
your new computer. Here's how:
- On your old computer, open
Internet Explorer.
- On the
Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
- Open the Folder drop-down list
at the top of the dialog box. This will show you the
path to your Favorites folder, for example
C:\Windows\Favorites.
- Using My Computer or
Windows Explorer, find your Favorites folder and
copy it to a floppy disk.
- On your new computer, find
your Favorites folder.
- Now copy the old Favorites
folder from the floppy disk to the folder containing
the Favorites folder on your new computer (for
example, C:\Windows).
Because both folders have the
same name, you'll be asked if you want to overwrite
files with the same name. Click Yes To All. Your old Favorites list
will be merged with your new one.
