Apparently, the monitor did not support the resolution set by the graphics
card. Modifying /usr/dt/config/Xservers (I run CDE on Tru64 5.0) for lower
resolution (640x480) solved the problem. The line is as follows:
:0 Local local_at_console /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -screen0 640x480 -vsync0 60
The list posting 1998/01/msg00021.html was very helpful in determining the
format of Xservers file.
