Troubleshooting client/server smtp/sendmail problem

Hi Tru-64 managers!

I'm looking for a way to turn on and and analyze very detailed event
logging in Tru64 to help us analyze a very strange problem we're having
with smtp/sendmail connections from a middleware product (WRQ SuperNova) to
our Tru64 (V 5.0) server. So far, it seems I am missing how to do this
using the Tru64 sysman utility.

We've written a multi-tier component based client/server application that
processes and monitors the performance of data acquistion and transaction
processing from an e-commerce application that runs across multiple
platforms and databases (Linux, VMS, NT, and Tru-64).

When the application detects problems with data acquisition or transaction
processing rates, it is programmed to automatically email a list of people
to notify them that a problem has occurred. We are using the smtp/sendmail
daemon on the Tru-64 server to handle the email processing.

Now for the problem. If we run the client component on any other host
(Linux, NT, VMS) it works perfectly. When the client wants to send email,
the component can establish a socket connection on port 25 and the email
gets sent correctly, however, if we try to run the component on the Tru-64
server itself, the component fails to send email. We can see (in the
component application's error logging) that it establishes a connection to
the smtp service on port 25 successfully, but then fails. There is no
reason for the failure.

When I look at the events on Tru-64 using sysman all seems well. I cannot
see any failures related to sendmail or smtp in the system event logs.
Sending mail via any other mail client (dtmail, pine, netscape) on the
Tru-64 box works perfectly. It sounds like a security/permissions issue but
so far I cannot seem to find out (from the event logs I have) what is going
on.

I am sure if we can get "down in the details" we can find this problem and
fix it.

How can we turn on logging to see all the details of what my Tru-64 server
is doing during these connections (on the server side)?

Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

Regards,

Jim
