Summary: Replace the disk if you can afford it.
Be careful if more than one disk is reporting this error.
Extra question: On which CD do I locate dia? (I've checked assoc. vol.2
and sw prod. 2/3 before my cd-player failed)
Gerard:
------------------------------------------------------------
Have you tried 'dia -R -i disk | more' already???
Soft device errors are most likely BAD-BLOCK-REPLACEMENTS (BBR's) and are
normal on SCSI drives.
If you receive many (let's say > 100 in a few days) and you have a
maintenance contract with Compaq I would advise you to replace the disk with
a new one...
Mitch:
------------------------------------------------------------
I was once told that mylex controllers don't deal with soft errors too
well and that if you get them to replace the disks.
CAUTION: Are you getting soft errors on more than one disk?
If so make sure your data is backed up. I had a problem once where I
had soft errors on multiple disks. When I swapped the first one out and
rebuilt it, the rebuild failed. I have always believed that the soft
errors on the other disk is what screwed me. So I had to rebuild the
whole raidset from scratch.
That's just one person's opinion. If you have a service contract, I
would nuke the disk.
Alan:
How long was the subsystem operating without soft errors?
[I do not rememeber, they have be there for quite some time]
While it isn't uncommon for disks to have recoverable
errors, lots of them are often a hint that it is wise
to replace a disk. If the disks are part of an array
use the control utility to replace the disks one at a
time, so that RAID can regenerate the data for the new
disk.
For JBOD disks; backup, replace, restore.
