Eliminating Trailing \n in a text file..

OK. This is driving me nuts (and not a far drive either).

I want to manually enter a text file of 8 characters,
I use vi, type my 8 characters, wq out and my file size is 9.

I tried using head to only take 8 characters and write into another file
and still, it's magically back to 9.

How do I stop that trailing \nl?

I'm trying to build a font download file, and the printer is coughing at
the extra \nl in the prefix file.

Oh yea, DU 3.2c on a AS2100
