SUMMARY:Problems upgrading from 4.0g -> 5.1, sizer version

A while back I posted a problem with a 4.0g -> 5.1 upgrade. I got some
helpful answers, but they weren't the fix. The problem was that there
were two versions of sizer on the machine, and the wrong version was being
used during the upgrade.

Initially the 5.1 kernel failed to build and genvmunix booted. However, I
was unable to build a kernel manually. It kept on complaining about a
syntax error in the config file, and this made no sense. Eventually
Compaq dialed in, and after many hours they called back saying they had
built the new kernel. They said the problem was that there were two
versions of sizer on the system, and that the wrong version was being used
to create the configuration files.

root#find / -name sizer* -print
/sbin/sizer.sav
/usr/sbin/sizer

It was /sbin/sizer that was the culprit. The tech renamed it to
sizer.sav, and then using /usr/sbin/sizer everything worked.

root#ls -l /sbin/sizer.sav
-rwxr-x--- 1 root system 270336 Jun 23 1998 /sbin/sizer.sav
root#ls -l /usr/sbin/sizer
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 378000 Aug 24 23:05 /usr/sbin/sizer

The machine that gave me all the head aches is an Alpha 4100. We also
have a 2100 and that upgrade was a piece of cake. I looked on that
machine and there is no sizer program in /sbin.

That machine does have a slightly different history. It was running
Digital UNIX prior to the 4100. It may have started at 4.0b, while I
think the 4100 started at 4.0d.

I hope that this posting saves someone else the headache we went through.
