Update Fails (bad Options)

Trying to update from 4.0D to 4.0F
First problem:
1.Update failed reason:
./home should be directory
./usr/include/X11/Xaw should be directory
./usr/opt should be directory

I have /usr and /opt on their own disks/filesystems.
So, no big deal, these listed here where links, so I
removed the links.
Xaw was pointing to Xaw3D
./home was pointing to ./usr/home and
./usr/opt was pointing to ./opt

Then installation went well past this stage, now
failing on:
./usr/.smdb./OSFBASE440.scp:-rw-r--r-- : bad option(s)
setld: Installation declined by subset control program
(PRE_L) "Base System" (OSFBASE440) will not be loaded.
0 of 58 subsets installed successfully.

So, I cheekd ./usr/.smdb/OSFBASE440.scp, and it has
permission 744. I guess if I give it 777 it should
work, but what should be the default for all the other
files in ./usr/.smdb./ so that update does not fail
for the same reason??
_Thanks
