NO NO NO, Ultra3 is backward compatible with Ultra2 and Ultra. It is
designed that way.
I would have stayed with Ultra3 {160 Mbit/s}. Your problem was, SCSI
controller, Cables, Terminators, Firmware, Differential SCSI, etc. Why
replace drives when you could have replaced the card.
Ultra2 is only 80 Mbit/s. You just lost about half burst trough put.
Are you trying to tell us that Compaq had some buggy Ultra2 controllers?
We have 3 LVD 50 gig drives that work fine hooked to a Personal Worstation with
an Ultra Wide controller (40 MB/S), but when we hook them to either a DS10 or
DS20 with the LVD ULTRA2 controller (80MB/S) the machines eventually freeze up.
Neither one give any error message other than logging NFS Server xxx no
responding, where xxx is themselves. We are at 5.1 (happened at 5.0A as well)
with the most recent firmware.
So, back to my original question. Did Compaq get stuck with some buggy cards?
Should I call field service and have the card replaced? It works fine with the
Compaq 18 gig LVD drive in the box (both boxes have these).
Thanks.
