Again, thanks to all that answered.
I am including an e-mail I received from John Francini
that summarized the answer to the question regarding
the differences between various BA356 storage
containers:
Thanks,
Ashok

JOHN FRANCINI (francini_at_zk3.dec.com) WROTE:
Don't know if you already got the answer, but it's
like this:
Beige BA356 boxes with 16-bit personality modules
support Fast-Wide SCSI, with a maximum throughput of
20 MB/sec.
Blue BA356 boxes with 16-bit Ultra-Wide personality
modules support Ultra Wide SCSI, with a maximum
throughput of 40 MB/sec.
Blue disks CANNOT be put into a beige BA356 box,
especially if the box is connected to an UltraSCSI
controller. The disk will tell the system that it can
do UltraSCSI, but neither the personality module nor
the cabling nor the shelf backplane can support the
higher speeds cleanly.
However, beige disks CAN be put into a blue BA356
shelf and will work
properly (but no faster than their particular design
speed), since the drive and the controller will
negotiate the maximum supported speed and work
accordingly.
... the ultra-wide personality modules come with the
VHDC connector. The merely fast-wide ones come with
the 68-pin Wide SCSI connector.
