This page documents my initial attempt at upgrading my install of NetWare 3.12 to NetWare 3.2 using the NetWare 3.2 Enhancement Pack.
NetWare 3.2 doesn't appear to be a standalone release you can just install. It seems to exist as NetWare 3.12 plus the 3.2 Enhancement Pack. Once the Enhancement Pack is installed the server will still report itself as 3.12 but there will be a few minor new features and less bugs. So in this way its kind of just a paid-for service pack.
I didn't receive any documentation with my copy of NetWare 3.2 and there doesn't appear to be any online documentation for it so the process documented on this page may not be the ideal way of doing this. I'm making a few guesses here.
To follow along you'll need:
To see creating the VM and installing NetWare 3.12 in a similar level of detail, click here.
We're starting off with a relatively clean install of NetWare 3.12. All I've done to it since installing it
is install NetWare for Macintosh. First thing to do is mount the NetWare 3.2 Enhancement Pack CD-ROM image in
the VM then go to the NetWare Console
Then load the installer: load install
Choose Product Options
And at this screen hit the Insert key.
My CD-ROM drive is D:\ in DOS so the path is D:\32ENH. As soon as you hit enter here the installation will start - you won't be prompted again!
Please Wait... (this takes a surprisingly long time)
Installing... This is when I remembered I forgot to take a snapshot of the VM before doing this! Oh well.
Install done! We've now got to go restart netware. Hit any key to continue.
This is the main visible sign that we're running NetWare 3.2: The enhancement pack is listed as an installed product. It
escape.
Hit escape again.
Yes, exit
down the server
and exit to DOS
Back at MS-DOS, run server to start NetWare back up again.
Back at the NetWare Server Console. The version still reports itself as v3.12 but that is expected
Over in the install utility (load install, choose System Options, choose Edit STARTUP.NCF File) we can see a few lines were added by the 3.2 Enhancement Pack:
And one line was added to AUTOEXE.NCF
Thats it! NetWare 3.2 installed! This saves a lot of patching (compare the v3.12 minimum patches to the v3.2 minimum patches!)
I'm not a netware expert, don't have any of those fancy novell certifications and have never administred a netware network; I've just played with it at home occasionally since 2004 or so.
