To my knowledge there are three clients available for MS-DOS, two of them work with Windows 3.x and one of them actually allows you to login from windows.
Client | Requirements | Notes |
32bit | 386SX or better CPU, PC/MS-DOS 5.0+, 4MB RAM, memory manager (HIMEM, EMM386, etc) |
Lower conventional memory usage than the other clients (0KB-4KB) but slightly higher overall resource usage (primarily extended memory)
compared to the 16bit (VLM) client. Also supports logging in from within windows. Windows must run in enhanced mode. |
16bit (VLM) | 286 CPU or better CPU, PC/MS-DOS 3.1+. May also work on the NEC V20. | Unsure what the memory requirements are but it seems to use around 13KB if you can load it high. |
Netware Shell (NETX) | 8086/8088 or better CPU, PC/MS-DOS 3.0+, 80K free RAM to load client | The original DOS client. This will run on any PC with at least 80K of free RAM after DOS 3.0 or newer has loaded. Its the only client option for the 8086. |
All of these clients require a 100% IBM PC Compatible. I don't know if there are any options for not-quite PCs running MS-DOS. A collection of clients for Japanese PCs (DOS/V, PC98, FMR, etc), has been grabbed from the Wayback machine but its highlighly unlikely to be comprehensive.
I'm not a netware expert, don't have any of those fancy novell certifications and have never administred a netware network; I've just played with it at home occasionally since 2004 or so.
